Cadere

The Latin word cadere means ‘to fall’ and is the origin for numerous words such as accident, cadaver and decadent. It is also the etymon of cadence which refers to the rhythm of speech or sound. Cadere felt the right word to use when reflecting on the last few years that has seen the emergence of a pandemic, the clearest signs yet of the effects of climate change and on a personal note, the loss of a parent and the birth of a child. With every fall there is an opportunity to rise again, to reorient and change our direction however these opportunities are not always taken.

These images have been created through a multistep process of reframing and rephotographing printed photographs. It is a process of layering where the framing remains visible and the artifice transparent. Working this way means images are not fixed but can be returned to, dismantled and re-appraised again and again. I find this to be a useful model to think through when balancing the optimism and joy of a new life against the dispiriting legacy of humans on the natural world.
